One of the founding members of the Federation, Vulcans were the first aliens to encounter the human race in 2063 when they were attracted to Earth by Zefram Cochrane's first historic warp flight. After they made first contact with humans, they helped them through the early stages of their interstellar era (although, many humans of that era would claim that Vulcans held them back). When Enterprise NX-01 first launched, the Vulcan High Command assigned a Vulcan, T'Pol, as science officer. Captain Jonathan Archer claimed that she was there as "a chaperone."

The Vulcan High Command dissolved in 2154 when they realized that they had strayed from the ways of Surak, the father of all of Vulcan's, teachings of logic. It was not until the discovery of the Kir'Shara that Vulcan returned to way of complete un-emotionalism and logic.

The first Human-Vulcan child was created in 2155 by Terra Prime, a group of human extremists who thought that Earth should remain independent from the rest of the galaxy. The child was created with DNA from Enterprise crewmembers T'Pol and Commander Charles Tucker. Unfortunately, due to a flaw in the procedure, the child did not live long. Mr. Spock is the product of a relationship between a Vulcan, Sarek, and a human, Amanda Grayson.
