Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > THE ANIMATED SERIES > YESTERYEAR > Behind the Scenes

Although "Star Trek: The Animated Series" isn't considered part of the "Star Trek Canon", this episode is generally accepted as such.

As a child, the young Spock traverses the Vulcan Forge, later seen in detail in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episodes "The Forge", "Awakening" and "Kir'Shara."

The bridge of the Enterprise is never seen in this episode.

First instance of an Andorian shown as a Starfleet officer. Others can be seen in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home."

A continuity error has Andorian Commander Thelin appear with white skin instead of blue. The animators were concerned that the blue skin would clash with his blue tunic.

Mark Lenard reprises his role of Sarek from the original series. He would go onto to play the character in "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock", "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" as well as the episodes "Sarek" and "Unification, Part I" of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Majel Barrett fills in for Jane Wyatt as Amanda, Spock's mother. Wyatt would return to the role in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home."

Seen in here is the young Spock's troubled childhood of torment and ridicule for being half-human as referenced in the classic episode "Journey To Babel."

Sopek is voiced by Keith Sutherland, son of Hal Sutherland, who directed every episode of "Star Trek: The Animated Series."

Reappearance and the last on-screen appearance of the Guardian of Forever from the classic episode "The City on the Edge of Forever." It would be used as a plot device in many "Star Trek" novels such as "Imzadi" and "Yesterday's Son."

The Healer has heard of a practical joke the young Spock had played two years earlier. In the classic episode "The Squire of Gothos", Mr. Spock claimed he had never played any practical jokes. However, he was probably just unwilling to admit it to Kirk.

Spock's mother's maiden name, Grayson, is revealed here.

We first learn of Mr. Spock's pet Sehlat in "Journey To Babel."

Captain Archer and Commander T'Pol were stallked by a Sehlat in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "The Forge."

"Star Trek: The Animated Series" made television history by being the first cartoon series to deal with euthanasa of a pet as the young Spock puts his pet Sehlat to sleep.

First appearance of the bird-like race of the Skorr. Another would appear in "The Jihad."

Through all of the "Vulcan Past" scenes, no one seems to notice that Mr. Spock is still wearing his Starfleet uniform, though in several shots, his boots would change from black to white.

Based on the age of young Spock when he was killed in the alternate timeline, Mr. Spock's request to visit Vulcan "30 years past", and the established year of "Star Trek: The Animated Series" of 2269, we can infer that Mr. Spock is roughly 37 years old and we can also infer that he is 136 years old by the time of "Unification, Part I and II."
