Episode Behind the Scenes

Never in the 79 original episodes of "Star Trek" was a woman ever in command of the Enterprise (aside from Number One in "The Cage", however, all of her command lines of dialogue were given off-screen.). Here, we see Lieutenant Uhura take command of the ship and lead a landing party.

Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy previously experienced rapid aging in the classic episode "The Deadly Years." Mr. Spock would later undergo rapid aging again in "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock."

Dr. Kathryn Pulaski was restored to youth in a similar fashion in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode: "Unnatural Selection."

Due to Majel Barrett's high number of speaking roles in this episode, Nichelle Nichols provided the voice of the Enterprise computer.

First instance of a female security officer, paving the way for Lieutenant Tasha Yar on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

The Enterprise now has more than one transporter room, or at least more than one transporter, implied by Uhura's order of "a security team to every transporter."
