HONOURARY COMMANDER ARI BN BEM PLAYED BY: James Doohan SPECIES: Pandronian A colony-creature able to split himself into multiple parts, Bem was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise as an independent observer during a series of exploratory and contact missions, but for six of those missions, Bem chose to remain in his quarters, only to suddenly join the landing party on planet Delta Theta III. He programmed the transporter to beam Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock into a lake where he could split into three parts and replace their phasers and communicators with fakes. Upon discovering a group of aborigines, Bem ran off and allowed himself to be captured so he could observe how the Starfleet crew would react to save him to prove their worth to planet Pandro. Believing the Enterprise crew to be worthless to him and his people, Bem abandoned Kirk and Mr. Spock, however, Kirk decided that he couldn't leave Bem on the planet and continue to contaminate the indigenous life. When Kirk and the landing party finds him, Bem believed he had misjudged them and thought he must destroy himself to pay for his failure. However, the alien entity on Delta Theta III convinced him not to kill himself so that he may learn from his mistake.
